Walter Jack Studios - Suncloud
Walter Jack Studio's in Bristol have been selected to further develop a design for a public artwork at Worthing's Splash point. The artwork, which is called "Suncloud" consists of 44 masts of approximately 4m in height. The masts are like a little woodland and have a clearing at their centre. The "Suncloud" will absorb light through the day and light up at night. Each of the masts has a panel of photovolatic cells above (angled towards the sun) : on the underside of each panel is a grid of L.E.D's and motion sensor - sensing movement beneath.
"Suncloud" gives dappled shade by day and gives back the light at night: the shiny poles could be seen as rain or as trees.
"Suncloud" is a game and an opportunity for inventing games, it's a play space- but one which aims to intrigue, to be worth a closer look. As you run beneath each panel your movement is sensed and the panel lights up and stays lit for 30 seconds or so. If you can run fast enough, you'll get all the panels lit at the same time. "Suncloud" is a play space and somewhere to play 'tag' - like playing amongst trees or any set of obstacles.
It is hoped the artwork can be installed at Splash point during 2008 and will create a real talking point for Worthing. This project has created a good deal of interest from all sections of the community including private sector developers and, it is hoped, that more public art projects will follow.
