Design Statement
The underlying vision of this scheme is to create a place with its own distinctive character, which can both accommodate a variety of recreational opportunities and enhance the seafront environment. The design reinforces local identity and civic pride whilst also reflecting Worthing’s historic, artistic and literary associations.
Central to the scheme is recognition of the current value of the site as a place to gather, meet and socialise; but additionally, to create a place to relax and appreciate the wide expanse of sea and sky during daytime and at night that create a link to the constellations. A single feature element comprising a shining beacon lies at the centre of the scheme. This provides a soft light glow marking its position at night whilst provoking the feeling of a strong single star. Concentric rings representing orbital constellations also manifest themselves in the form of the Zodiac. This provides a fun and easily identifiable theme.
Water is of course the most significant feature of the location. The sea is forever changing, from daily to seasonal fluctuations and it is this element that provokes strong emotional responses. However, it is currently very difficult to access the water, because the existing ground levels and sea defence wall create a barrier. By encouraging both visual and physical accessibility, creating a place to view the shore, sea and sky, it will provide a unique yet simple appreciation of the power of water and the mystery of the Universe.
The materials chosen are robust and durable, to withstand varying and harsh climatic conditions. The design accommodates subtle changes in level to create and celebrate views to the sea, allowing access for all in order to further strengthen the inclusive ambitions for this project. The design also includes a strategy for public art that will allow local art groups together with wider stakeholders to play a significant role.
