The Democratic View

We live in a symbolic landscape wherever we live, language breeds metaphors and similes to keep us in that landscape. Our aim is to produce a symbol that defines the act of gazing and intrinsically relates to the cultural and natural processes of Splash Point and Worthing, inclusive and outspoken.

3 lines of influence

the lookout | a symbol for a new view
the signal | announcing seafront regeneration
crossing the edge | reinforcing ritual

Creating a symbolic event, may it be landmark or threshold, it must strengthen the existing qualities of place and interpret in a contemporary way the historic qualities that may be missing.

The current sea defence wall is a strong plan symbol that has been carefully thought through in its design and construction. Interacting with this and lifting it to a higher dimension illuminates the symbol to a wider audience.

We aim to honour the view by giving a variety of ways in which people of all abilities can experience it and further understand it. The vision or seeing the view is only one aspect of our interaction with the land and seascape before us. By eleavting, crossing or signalising the view in different ways we open up a variety of physical and sensory connections that are constantly changing and help us reinforce the sense of seafront and place.

The smell of seaweed, the bang of the starters pistol, mackerel smoking on the barbeque, the smoothenss of a pebble, vinegar on cockles, the south westerly gales, a flag fluttering overhead ........
