A new dawn for Suncloud

Suncloud will no longer feature at Splash Point on Worthing seafront. Worthing Borough Council made the decision following test results of a prototype of the artwork. The prototype was tested for several months, and a number of technical problems arose during this period and although these are being solved, unfortunately it will not meet the current timescale.
Although the artwork was the favourite choice of the majority of residents, the Council were unable to approve the prototype which did not fully function during the test period.
Installation of the prototype pole was carried out in March this year. Problems were identified with the motion sensors and the LED lights. This problem was resolved in the workshop before the pole was returned for further testing.
The Council is aware it will take time to resolve the remaining technical difficulties.
The Council will still include innovative and exciting public art at Splash Point as part of the Sea Change regeneration scheme. The Sea Change programme is managed by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE).www.cabe.org.uk/sea-change. The shortlisted Landscape Architects have been informed of the situation and Suncloud will not feature in their initial design concepts.
Chosen because it was a fun and interactive piece of art for visitors to Splash Point to enjoy, Suncloud featured 33 poles topped with solar-powered lights which are triggered when people walk underneath. The detailed designs for Suncloud could be incorporated in future development sites.
Cabinet member for regeneration, Ann Barlow said:
“We are obviously disappointed about Suncloud still needing further testing. However, we are in a fortunate position that we have secured £500,000 of Sea Change funding for the Splash Point area. The design competition is already underway and Public Art could be included. The second stage judging of the four shortlisted designers will take place on the 4th September 2009 following a Public Consultation exercise."
