Ice Prince Festival

An arts festival to remember the enormous effort to clean up thousands of tons of wood from Worthing beaches, following the sinking of the Ice Prince last January, started on Monday 19th January and ran until Sunday 25th Jan.

Worthing Borough Council part-funded the festival with a grant to Worthing Arts Council chaired by Stefan Sykes. The week long festival started with the unveiling of specially commissioned stained glass window on the pier by artist Chris Brown.

Other events included a photography exhibition "Worthing Wood" at the Guildbourne Centre, a short film called 'The Ice Prince Myth'  screened at the Ritz cinema on the 24th and 25th January at the Guildbourne Centre as well as a literary lunch and "Sound of Timber" all-day music workshop by Worthing Revolutionary Music.

The Ice Prince sank 27 nautical miles south of Portland Bill on the evening of 14 January 2008.  She was carrying a cargo of approximately 5000 tonnes of timber, 3000 tonnes in the hold and 2000 on the deck.

Cabinet member for regeneration, Ann Barlow said:  “It is not every day that tonnes of timber arrives on Worthing beaches as it did last year.  The arts festival will mark this unusual event, which many people will remember for years. We’re really thrilled with the amount of artistic talent in the town and hope loads of people have a chance to visit one of the many events.”

We would like to thank Worthing Arts Council, Worthing Revolutionary Arts and Music, and everyone who came along to the events, and finally to those who took part in making this festival an enormous success.

Thank you!
