Public Art Strategy

Public art can be temporary – for example a special screening of a film or a projection on the facade of a building - or permanent, for example a sculpture on a roundabout, or artworks in a school or hospital, or sited along a river walk way or in a public park.

Adur and Worthing Councils are working together to produce a Public Art Strategy.  This document, once completed, will become a planning document in both areas.  This will mean that major investors in the area will be required to consider public art right from the start of their plans and will have a responsibility for working with the local community and local artists to deliver quality public art as part of site developments.

Your Feedback and Ideas

As part of the process of developing the Strategy, we want to talk to as many interested people as possible to gather their knowledge, ideas and inspiration.  Therefore, if you have any suggestions whihc you feel should be considered, please give us your thoughts by filling in our online form as per below

We recently held several consultation events, one, aimed at young people took place at Northbrook College on the 25th November.  Below are a few ideas put forward by some of the enthusiastic students, of what they think public art should aim to do!

The questions we would like to ask are:

  •  What does public art mean to you?
  • What do you like about public art?
  • What sort of public art would you like to see in Worthing and Adur districts?
  • Do you have any ideas for themes to inspire new public art in Worthing and Adur? (e.g. literature, famous people associated with the area, music, landscape features)
  • Are there any specific locations where you would like to see public art?

You can complete the on-line consultation on Worthing Borough Council's main website.

If you want any further information about the Strategy or the events please contact the Arts Development Team at Adur District Council on 01273 263274 or the Worthing Regeneration Team on 01903 221304.
