Worthing Chapel Road Scheme

West Sussex County Council in partnership with Worthing Borough Council have commissioned specialist consultants to deliver a widespread package of safety improvements for the busy Chapel Road and Marine Parade areas of Worthing

Residents were invited to "Meet the Designers" on 17th September. The designer team from London Based consultants BDP, looked at ideas such as:

  • A 20 mph zone throughout the whole of Chapel Road and extending through to South Street and Marine Parade.
  • Improved bus stops and taxi waiting areas
  • Better street lighting, which will also reduce crime and the fear of crime
  • Street furniture such as seating
  • Tree planting to improve the environment
  • Public art

Chapel Road was chosen for the bid because it is busy, virtually round the clock, during the day by a large number of vulnerable road users such as older people, and by night young people heading for the bars and nearby clubs.

During the last five years there have been 37 recorded casualty accidents in the Chapel Road/Marine Parade Areas. Lieutenant Colonel Tex Pemberton, West Sussex Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport said: "The aim is to build on the success of a similar scheme in the South Street area which has made it safer and improve the environment for shoppers."

The event follows a successful bid by West Sussex County Council to improve the safety and environment at Chapel Road and Marine Parade. The Scheme has been awarded £420,000 by the Department of Transport over the two year period from 2007-2009.

The County Council and the Borough Council are adding to the fund taking it to around £650,000.
